Several bills were introduced in the National Congress in Brazil to attempt to regulate the profession of an interpreter. None passed. The only regulated profession in the field is that of official public translator.

Even though there are accredited interpretation courses in Brazilian universities, the interpreters profession itself remains unofficial. The 13.609 decree of 1943 is the only tool which makes the profession feasible in Brazil.
